Yaesu FT-101E No Transmit?

I have a Yaesu FT-101E. It was my late grandfathers and he used this rig regularly. However; When I key the mic I can hear the relay switch on and the meter swings left (reverse modulation?) and there is no transmit. The receive works. But as stated; No transmit. Mic believed to be wired correctly. Wired 4-Pin Cobra. I was thinking and hoping the tubes werent bad. But its possible. Any help would be appreciated. -And yes im a licensed ham operator. KD8NCL
I do know how to operate this radio. I have the original manual and im the 3rd owner of this radio. Its been in my family since the 70’s. The question is; Why is it not transmitting?

how are you measuring output power, you say it is not transmitting. in SSB mode there should be no output power in the absense of modulation. put in CW mode to tune. you need to be connected to a resonate antenna or a dummy load to tune.

to trouble shoot remove the 12BY7 tube, use a ham receiver and listen for the oscillator output on channel when keying. verify the VFO is working by changing frequency slightly. re-install the 12BY7 and listen again, the ham receiver should show marked increase in on channel power when momentarily keyed. using the multimeter, key and adjust “drive” tuning with the drive level at halfway. you should get a reaction as it turns, leave at maximum setting. this meter position measures the rectified DC of the RF voltage into the grid of the final PA tube which provides part of the operating bias of the final.

at this point you should be getting a small indication of output power when keyed. now tune the final by the book proceedure (tune and load knobs, drive level control). do not keep keyed for more than 30 seconds at a clip, observing PA plate current maximums. if the plate current does not react to tuning then the antenna is at fault or drive is insufficient. you should be getting a strong indication of output power at this point.

change to SSB. key transmitter, output should be zero. speak iinto mic, output should peak with voice. check modulation quality with the ham receiver.

this proceedure should be sufficient to find a bad VFO, 12BY7 IPA or PA tube or confirm normal operation.
