what is the best bet for a pair of rechargeable 2-way radios ?

i don’t necessarily need 20 miles of range, but prefer 5 miles of range with clear reception and ease of use.

Depends on your range of use. 5 miles over watter is no problem for most radio services. 5 miles in the woods is likely to be the worst case. Most of the less expensive FRS portable units won’t give you that much range, so you may consider the GMRS service which does require a license to use. One ticket per family is all you need so if your pair is for family use then you only need one. CB and Ham radio will normally do the job as well but the price of poker goes up real fast for their units.
