Does any one know why Michael Jackson covers his microphone with his hand sometimes while singing live?

I’ve seen it on videos online and from stuff on TV, such as the 30th Anniversary concert special. He seems to do this with his headset microphone and I think also with a regular microphone. I’ve heard that he lip-syncs sometimes but does that have anything to do with it? Thanks.

he answered in an interview that yes sometimes he lip sings but its very rare. plus i agree with the first answer its to be heard better specially since michael has a soft spoken voice
